LATIN

Latin is an ancient language, and very few people still speak it in everyday life; nonetheless, it has been one of the most important languages in history. PTI’s Latin program offers an introduction to the Latin language and an opportunity for reflection upon the history of Latin and its importance to the present. Our two-course sequence, which fulfills the language requirement for the Associate’s Degree, covers the basics of Latin grammar (our textbook is Wheelock), whilst developing the skills for writing and translating Latin texts. It also provides an introduction to classical history, and to the literary and cultural traditions Latin helped to inspire.

Latin 101: Latin I

This course is designed to provide a first introduction to Latin. Students will develop an introductory grounding in Latin grammar (Wheelock 1-15); build a core Latin vocabulary; gain familiarity with a range of Latin authors; discuss historical and contemporary issues regarding “classical antiquity”; develop the ability to translate into and out of Latin; and create a final project relating Latin to their personal interests. Regular assignments will include preparing material from the grammar textbook, translations into and out of Latin, compositions in Latin, and memorization of vocabulary and forms.

Latin 102: Latin II

This course is the continuation of Latin 101. Students will complete their overview of the fundamentals of Latin grammar (Wheelock 15-40), and study short works by Vergil, Cicero, as well as the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers. They will strengthen their ability to translate into and out of Latin, and create final projects based on their own interests. Regular assignments will include preparing material from the grammar textbook, translations, Latin composition, and memorization of vocabulary and forms.
